Mike Durkin

Mike has been a Non-Executive Director of the Health Services Safety Investigations Body (HSSIB) Board since October 2023.

Throughout his career Mike has supported leaders in patient safety across England and globally. He was awarded an OBE by the Queen in 2017 in recognition of his services to patient safety.

He is Senior Advisor on Patient Safety Policy and Leadership at the Institute of Global Health Innovation, and Director of the Academic Partnership for the Global Patient Safety Collaborative, launched in 2019 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UK Government. Prior to this he held the position of National Director of Patient Safety at NHS Improvement, from 2012 to 2017.

Mike is a visiting professor at the Institute of Global Health Innovation, Imperial College London, and the University of the West of England. He sits on national and international research, policy and patient safety advisory boards, including the WHO Task Force on the Global Action Plan for Patient Safety.
