Dr Rosie Benneyworth, Interim Chief Executive, comments on the findings within the report saying:
“The Spotlight report is both heartening and concerning and highlights the reality for those working on the frontlines of care. It is incredibly positive that it reflects how committed colleagues within the nursing and midwifery profession are to making a difference in people’s lives – this is something we see when visiting healthcare providers during our investigations and talking to NHS staff across the country.
“However, it is incredibly troubling to learn that over 70% of nursing staff have experienced harassment, bullying and abuse and 40% have experienced discrimination because of their ethnicity or age. It is also deeply concerning — though sadly not surprising — that the survey shows staff struggling under the weight of their workloads.
“The reports we have published on workforce and patient safety and fatigue make clear that sustained bullying, discrimination and excessive workload pressures can have profound and lasting effects, and, as these findings demonstrate, may be a key factor in staff not recommending nursing or midwifery as a profession.
“As the report says it is vital that everyone works together to tackle the concerns raised in the survey. Those delivering crucial care to patients deserve to do so in environments that support the psychological and physical safety of all.”
