The honours system recognises people who have made achievements in public life and committed themselves to serving and helping the UK.
Commenting on the award, Ted said: “I am immensely grateful for all the incredible colleagues who have supported me throughout my career, and I am proud of the work of colleagues at HSSIB who are leading improvements in the safety of patient care. Their work is already changing safety culture for the better and saving many patients from harm.
“I believe we are at a tipping point in how we manage patient safety and this award gives me encouragement that we, together with others who share our ambition, have the support to make change happen to deliver safer care for all.”
Ted is a paediatric cardiologist and healthcare leader whose career has spanned clinical practice, academic leadership, national regulation, and patient safety policy in England. He was a leading figure in the clinical adoption of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging for children with congenital heart disease. He went on to hold senior leadership roles at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, including Medical Director, and led the development of the Evelina London Children’s Hospital. He later served as Chief Inspector of Hospitals at the Care Quality Commission, where he helped shape national approaches to quality, leadership and safety.
He is the first Chair of HSSIB, promoting learning-focused, systems-based approaches to patient safety.
Our congratulations to Ted for this well-deserved recognition.
